In the year 1857, during the first struggle for independence, a local man named Devshankar Shukla was asked to make Ghari for the freedom fighter Tatya Tope and his mutineers. As Ghari was known as a sweet that energizes people, the Ghari was given to the freedom fighters to help them gain strength for their mission.

Another story says that Lord Krishna performed the RaasLeela with thousands of Gopis on Sharad Purnima. Many Gujaratis kept a fast on that day- for breaking the fast they consumed something called ‘DoodhPooha’ which was a sweet that was like Ghari.
